Succeeding in affiliate marketing these days requires a self-starting attitude, the ability to make a commitment, and perseverance. There’s stuff you have to know and do as well as stuff you should avoid. I call this stuff the ropes to know and the ropes to skip. You’re probably a self-starter, but will you be able to make the commitment to persevere? You should be aware of these common affiliate-marketing mistakes so you can avoid them.
- Reinventing the wheel – You’ve heard that one before, but you may be flabbergasted by the number of people who believe they can succeed at affiliate marketing by NOT doing what successful people them have already done. Instead, they insist on repeating the same mistakes successful people made before they succeeded. Terrific strategies and tactics already exist in affiliate marketing. Learn and follow them. You will have a much better shot at success.
- Not investing in content – Apart from products, content is your next most important aspect of marketing your affiliate products. Without investing in content using your time to write the content, or investing dollars to buy original, unique and well-written content, then you may as well not even bother trying to be an affiliate marketer. Content is and will always be king, no matter what form it takes… an article, audio or video or a combination of the three.
- Promoting products you haven’t used – Come on…you already know this, don’t you? You should have used the products in order to honestly promote them. If you haven’t seen a free preview copy, or you haven’t used it, then you should not promote it…Period. How can you know the product is good if you’ve never experienced it? If you promote a line of products such as children’s clothing, it’s okay to buy or get a few free samples and then promote the full line. Here’s the thing…if you’re promoting a specific product and you didn’t buy it, can you really expect others to spend money you’re not willing to spend?
- Not understanding SEO – Search engine optimization is your friend. All content on all your sites, sales pages, article marketing articles, as well everything else related to your content should be optimized for the search engines. When you get right down to it, nearly every sale made via the Internet started with someone using a search engine. The code on your site like the meta tags, title tags, and alt tags on photographs all need to tweaked so to be search engine friendly. Every facet of your marketing efforts should consider SEO, which also calls for keyword research and even social media marketing.
- Not sticking to a niche – Whenever you try to work in too many areas you’ll get lost. Pick a narrow niche; find a few products that solve the problem(s) of your targeted niche and you’ll do a lot better in affiliate marketing. Casting a broad marketing net doesn’t work for any type of marketing. One of the first things you need to find out is how to understand your target market intimately. You need to recognize exactly what problems they face, the results they want, and how you can offer a solution that works to them.
- Not staying the course – A lot of people who get involved with affiliate marketing get distracted easily by the new programs, new products, and new information that are launched every week. It is very easy and expensive to fall into this trap. It is more crucial to stay the course. Stick to one product at a time inside your niche until you are making money. Then, taking what you’ve learned, move on to the next product. In the beginning, promote four or five products or product lines at a time so you aren’t spread too thin.
Take these tips to heart and you’ll make affiliate marketing a lot easier on yourself, and probably more profitable too.
